It's hard to imagine now, but Golden Gate Park was once a landscape of shifting sand dunes. Opening in 1870, the park was the result of a multiyear effort to transform that wasteland into a green oasis. Today, it covers over one thousand acres of lakes and meadows.
In the southwest corner, you'll find the Murphy Windmill, built between 1905 and 1907. This landmark wasn't just for show; it helped pump the water necessary to turn those dunes into the lush park we see today. It's a living reminder of the engineering and vision required to create one of the city's most scenic escapes.
