San Francisco, California story
A Gift of Green
Samuel G. Murphy gifted the city a windmill that helped create Golden Gate Park.
Read the story
Long before Golden Gate Park was a lush oasis, it was a landscape of shifting sand dunes. To help transform this wilderness into a green sanctuary, a banker named Samuel G. Murphy gave the city a special gift: the Murphy Windmill.
Built between 1905 and 1908, this massive structure wasn't just for show; it actually pumped the water needed to make the park grow. Today, it stands as a symbol of early twentieth-century engineering in the southwest corner of the park. While you can view it any time for free, keep an eye on those sails—they typically spin on weekends and holidays, welcoming the wind just as they did over a century ago.
