Before the Presidio was a U.S. Army post or a National Park, it was a landscape defined by the natural world and its first inhabitants. The land at the Golden Gate was the traditional territory of the Yelamu, a local tribe of the Ramaytush Ohlone peoples.
For centuries, they lived in harmony with the coastal wildlife and forests long before Spanish arrival in seventeen seventy-six marked the start of the area's military history. Today, as you walk through this National Historic Landmark District, you're stepping on ground that has transitioned from indigenous territory to a Spanish outpost, a Mexican republic site, and finally a public park. It's a place where the deep, natural history of the region still whispers beneath the paved paths.
