Alcatraz is famous for its prisoners, but the island has a much wilder history. Long before it became a federal penitentiary, this rocky outpost in the middle of the bay served as a bird sanctuary. While the military used the island as a fortress and prison for nearly 80 years, the natural world reclaimed its space.

The name Alcatraz itself comes from the Spanish word Alcatraces, a nod to the pelicans that frequent the shores. Today, the island is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, where the legacy of the American Indian Red Power movement and military history coexist with the wild birds that call the cliffs home. Next time you look out toward the rock, remember it's not just a monument to incarceration, but a sanctuary for the winged inhabitants of the bay.
