What to know
Unexpected Productions is an improvisational comedy company that has served as a cornerstone of the Seattle arts scene for over four decades. The company's foundations were laid in 1982 when TheatreSports first debuted in the city. After becoming an official nonprofit theater in 1983 and spending time at the Intiman Playhouse, the troupe eventually found its permanent home at the Market Theater in May 1991. Situated at 1428 Post Alley, the Market Theater is a vibrant hub for creativity in the Tourist District. The company produces ten shows per week, including the Duo Comedy Showcase on Wednesdays and the long-running Theatresports, which is recognized as the longest-running show in Seattle. Beyond performances, the venue hosts the Seattle International Festival of Improvisation and provides improv classes for aspiring comedians. The theater is also the birthplace of one of the city's most peculiar landmarks: the Gum Wall. This tradition began when a patron waiting in line for Theatresports stuck a piece of chewed gum topped with a penny to the brickwork. By 1998, the wall had been reconstructed three times before the market officially accepted the tradition. Today, the wall spans 54 feet wide and 8 feet high, containing an estimated 250,000 wads of gum. Visitors can experience a variety of improvised plays created in the moment, ranging from the Improv Happy Hour on Fridays and Saturdays to the Festival of Improvised Plays on Sundays. With a worldwide reputation for high-quality improvisation, the venue continues to blend laughter and community in the heart of the historic market.
