Did you know that beneath your feet, there's a ghost city? In 1889, a Great Fire tore through Seattle, leaving the downtown core in ruins. But instead of just clearing the debris, the city did something strange: they built the new streets one story higher.

They essentially entombed the original storefronts and sidewalks in dirt to create a drier, safer city. For decades, people walked right over the roofs of the old town. Today, you can actually descend into those buried corridors and walk through the remnants of the first Seattle.

It's a literal layer of history, turning the city into a living archaeological site. It reminds us that Seattle isn't just about the future—it's built directly on top of its own survival.
