In 1975, a group of Asian American activists looked at a piece of steep, undeveloped land and saw a sanctuary. Through negotiations with a local business owner named Danny Woo, they converted the property into a community garden in the heart of the Chinatown-International District. What began as a grassroots effort to reclaim urban space became a vital green lung for the neighborhood.

Following the passing of Danny Woo, the space was renamed in his honor, officially becoming the Danny Woo International District Community Garden. Open from dawn until dusk, it remains a free public space where the city's hustle fades into the background. It's a living reminder that a little persistence and a shared vision can turn a rocky hillside into a thriving community oasis.
