Tucked away in the International District is a space that has weathered the storms of history. The Nippon Kan Theatre opened in 1909 as a cultural and community hub for Seattle's Japanese American community, located right below the Astor Hotel. For decades, it was a center for art and connection, until a heartbreaking silence fell in 1942 during the Japanese American internment.

The theatre remained closed for nearly forty years until restoration efforts led by architect Edward Burke and his wife Betty brought it back to life in 1981. After another closure in 2005, the space underwent a full restoration in 2024. Now, it stands as a testament to resilience and the enduring spirit of the community that built it over a century ago.
