Imagine one hundred and seventy people, all newcomers to a strange city, deciding to bet on their own future together. In 1910, a group of early Chinese pioneers did exactly that. They pooled their hard-earned resources to build the East and West Kong Yick Buildings, creating a literal foundation for their community in a brand new Chinatown.
The East Kong Yick Building wasn't just a piece of real estate; it was a lifeline. With retail on the ground floor and hotel rooms above, it served as a cultural hub and lodging for immigrants for decades. Today, that spirit of preservation lives on, as the building has been reconstructed to house the Wing Luke Museum.
It stands now as a National Heritage Site, reminding us that the real gold of the early century was often found in the strength of a shared community.
