In 1975, a group of Asian American activists looked at a stretch of steep, undeveloped land and saw a possibility. They negotiated with a local business owner named Danny Woo to transform his property into a community garden. Now known as the Danny Woo International District Community Garden, this space became a sanctuary in the heart of the Chinatown-International District.
It wasn't just about planting vegetables; it was about creating a public oasis for the community to gather and grow together. The garden was eventually renamed in Danny Woo's honor after his passing, serving as a living tribute to his contribution to the neighborhood. It remains a free, open space from dawn until dusk, where the history of activism is written in the greenery.
