Some of the most beautiful spots in the city grew from a fight for space. In 1975, Asian American activists looked at a stretch of steep, undeveloped land owned by business owner Danny Woo and saw an opportunity. They negotiated to convert that property into a community garden, creating a green sanctuary right in the Chinatown-International District.
It became a place where nature and community activism intertwined. After Danny Woo passed away, the site was renamed the Danny Woo International District Community Garden in his honor. Now, it remains a free, public oasis, reminding every visitor that a little bit of activism can bloom into something that feeds the soul of a neighborhood.
