Nature doesn't always happen on flat ground. In 1975, a group of Asian American activists looked at a stretch of steep, undeveloped land owned by a business owner named Danny Woo and imagined something better. They negotiated to convert that challenging hillside into a community garden in the heart of the Chinatown-International District.
It wasn't just about growing vegetables; it was an act of community empowerment. The garden was later renamed in Danny Woo's honor after his passing. Today, the Danny Woo International District Community Garden remains a free, public space where the city's residents can cultivate plants and connections on a slope that once seemed unusable.
