In the heart of the Chinatown-International District, there's a lush escape that grew out of a negotiation. In 1975, Asian American activists worked with a business owner named Danny Woo to transform a piece of steep, undeveloped land into a community resource. This effort created the Danny Woo International District Community Garden.

For decades, it has served as a free, public space where the community can connect with the earth amidst the urban bustle. After Danny Woo passed away, the garden was renamed in his honor, cementing his legacy as part of the neighborhood's landscape. Open from dawn until dusk, the garden remains a testament to what happens when activists and landowners collaborate to ensure that green, public spaces exist for the people who live and work in the district.
