In 1975, a group of Asian American activists looked at a steep, undeveloped piece of land in the Chinatown-International District and saw an opportunity. They negotiated with a local business owner named Danny Woo to convert his property into something that served the whole community. Together, they transformed that difficult terrain into what we now know as the Danny Woo International District Community Garden.
It wasn't just about planting vegetables; it was an act of claiming space and fostering community strength in the heart of the city. After Danny Woo passed away, the garden was renamed in his honor, continuing his legacy of generosity. Today, it remains a free, public sanctuary, proving that a little bit of activism and some hard work can turn a steep slope into a flourishing oasis.
