The Folger Shakespeare Library is an independent research library located on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. It houses the world's largest collection of William Shakespeare's printed works, as well as a primary repository for rare materials from the early modern period between 1500 and 1750 in Britain and Europe. Established by Henry Clay Folger and his wife Emily Jordan Folger, the institution opened its doors to the public in 1932, two years after Henry's death. In 1930, the library was placed in trust of Amherst College, Henry Folger's alma mater, and the Trustees of Amherst College continue to administer the privately endowed library today. As a world-renowned center for scholarship, learning, and the arts, the Folger is an internationally recognized research library. It leads K-12 Shakespeare education and produces award-winning cultural programs, including theater, music, poetry, and lectures. Following a major expansion, the library reopened to the public in summer 2024 with a brand new wing featuring two exhibition halls. This expansion has significantly expanded public access to its vast collections of rare books, manuscripts, and works of art from the early modern period.
