Walk down 8th Street SE and you'll find Barracks Row, a place where history and modern city life collide. This corridor is the oldest commercial district in D.C., growing early on because of its proximity to the Washington Navy Yard and the Marine Barracks. But like many urban centers, it faced a steep decline after World War II, hit hard by the construction of the Southeast Freeway in 1962 and the riots of 1968.

For the last twenty years, however, a dedicated Main Street organization has been working to preserve and revitalize these five blocks. Today, it's transformed back into a vibrant culinary and entertainment destination, proving that a community can reclaim its heritage and build something new on top of it.
