Tucked away at 1411 West Street Southeast is Cedar Hill, the private retreat of Frederick Douglass. Douglass’s journey is the ultimate American arc: he escaped slavery to become one of the nation's most influential abolitionists, authors, and statesmen. He acquired this Greek Revival and Italianate residence in 1877, creating a sanctuary where he could reflect on his fight for equal rights.

The site, which includes an eight-and-a-half-acre property, was eventually entrusted to the National Park Service in 1962. Walking these grounds today, you're stepping into the personal space of a man who redefined the identity of freedom and citizenship through the power of his voice.
