Tucked away in the Potomac River is Theodore Roosevelt Island, a place that feels worlds away from the city's concrete. In the 1930s, this spot was nothing more than neglected farmland. It was transformed into a memorial to Roosevelt, a man who lived his life as a dedicated outdoorsman and conservationist.

The project was so significant that photographs still exist showing the Civilian Conservation Corps helping to develop the land. Today, the island stands as a green sanctuary in the middle of the river, reminding us that the natural beauty of the Potomac is just as much a part of Washington's heritage as the marble monuments on shore.
