In Lincoln Park on Capitol Hill, the Emancipation Memorial stands as a powerful testament to freedom. Dedicated in 1876, this bronze statue was unique from the start because it was funded by the wages of formerly enslaved people. The unveiling was a massive event, with a crowd of over 25,000 people and a keynote address by Frederick Douglass.

While the monument depicts the moment of liberation, the park around it has evolved, and in 1974, the statue was rotated to face the Mary McLeod Bethune memorial. It's a place where the heavy silence of history meets the enduring hope of a people who paid for their own monument.
