Imagine a grand house designed in 1898, a masterpiece of the Beaux Arts style. This was the Richard H. Townsend House, built for Mary Scott Townsend and her husband, Richard.

It was meant to be a sanctuary for their life together, but tragedy struck almost immediately. Richard died shortly after the house was completed, leaving Mary in a vast, silent residence. For the next three decades, Mary remained in the house alone, preserving the memory of her husband until her own death in 1931.

Today, the building serves as the home of the Cosmos Club, but the walls still hold the echo of a love that outlasted a lifetime. As you walk past, think of the quiet strength it takes to keep a home alive for the sake of a lost partner.
